School opens at 8:45----School Starts at 9:00am. --- School Closes at 3:00pm.

Dismissal at Kaler

At 3PM each day, we dismiss Kaler students. School staff and parents are working together to ensure the safety of children as they leave the school and school grounds. It is always helpful to receive reports from parents when inappropriate and unsafe student behavior is observed. We do our best to follow up on such reports.

As parents are aware the end of the school day presents unique challenges. Parents arrive in cars to pick up children, busses arrive to load children and students who walk or ride bicylces to school are dismissed. At the end of each school day, our teachers or school staff members escort students to awaiting busses. We stress the importance of walking safely and engaging in safe behavior near the entrance to the school.

While we are not in a position to closely monitor students as they leave the school grounds onto South Kelsey Street, we are very concerned about the safety of the many walkers in that area. Nearly all walking students proceed down South Kelsey to the very busy Broadway intersection. At that location, a crossing guard can safely escort children across the street. In addition to stopping traffic for students who need to cross Broadway, the crossing guard halts Broadway traffic from South Kelsey. In contrast to the corner of South Kelsey and Broadway, the corner of Hoyt Street and Broadway does not have a crossing guard. At this location, visibility of oncoming traffic is frequently very limited, given the cars parked adjacent to Campbell's Market. With this limited visibility, we encourage drivers to remain on South Kelsey and await the signal from the crossing guard that there are no walkers present and it is safe to proceed.
